Emily’s Reading Response to Cold Comfort Farm
This story defiantly took some warming up to. I did not particularly care for the book in the beginning chapters mainly because I was a bit confused as to exactly who was who, with so many different characters just appearing and what the humor was in it. (Farmhands, family, etc.). I was also confused as to the point of what was going on at certain scenes (Such as the three legged cow, watershed talks, Mr. Mybug). Trying to understand Flora’s motives, and the environment she moved to at the farm was difficult to image because some things plainly just did not make much sense or were hard to image.  For me I feel like the author in the beginning is trying to make the reader dislike Flora and have some confusion as to what is truly going on in her mind, not many things get answered at the end of the story we are still left with many question however I understand more of who Flora really is and in the end who she really cared for. I like the ending, I thought it was sweet no matter how un-realistic it is that a guy someone loves is going to fly in with a plane and pick you up and fly away together. Another scene that I thought was interesting and related to another story we read was at the ball room dance party. I see a similarity with Flora and Higgins here, in the way they tried to make a person more of a valuable object in a way. It was nice what Flora had done for Elfine, getting her dressed up and eventually engaged to decent man. However how she described it bothered me, it was her “project”. I am sure that Flora did care for Elfine in some ways, however how it came across was that her work was complete and it was all because of her. Her attitude here and her ideas were a bit selfish, but not so much her actions in helping Elfine. Overall the book became better and more interesting for me towards the end, and it turned out to be better than I thought when I first started reading it, and I am defiantly going to try and see the movie someday.
